The IRS boosted the amount Americans can deduct for standard
business driving by almost 20%, spurred by gas prices that have spiked
above $3 a gallon in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
The standard business mileage rate went up to 48.5 cents per mile, up from 40.5 cents.
But the rates for medical and moving mileage jumped even more
sharply, by nearly 50%, to 15 cents a mile, up from 7 cents. The
medical and moving mileage is 22 cents up from 15 cents. Charitable
mileage remains the same at 14 cents a mile.
The new rates will apply from Septembert 1 through year's end
