Autobiography of Joseph Wu

I was born in a small village of Kai-Yun Li, Chu-Nan, Miali, Taiwan.  My grandpa had 12 children. My father was his oldest son.  We all lived together as a big family. For some reasons, my mother and grandma could not get along, and always quarreled with each other, and even fought over trivial things all the time. One day my mother was forced to leave the house when I was still a baby. Every time my mother told me the story; she always had tears in her eyes.

During that time, I was stricken with polio, and have become a limp for the rest of my life.  However, I was lucky enough to go through elementary school and middle school and then was accepted by Provincial Hsin-Chu High School.  My father was very excited about my progress in education.  After I entered Cheng Kung University as a freshman, my father passed away suddenly.  It was the saddest time in my life.

After I completed my BS in chemistry and MS at WPI, Massachusetts, I had an opportunity to come to University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia for my further study in chemistry.  I studied chemical reaction kinetics and mechanism for my thesis.  After my graduation, I could not find a job.  My thesis mentor told me that there was a joint research program from Medical school at Department of Biophysics and Department of Human Genetics.  Both Departments accepted me as a postdoctoral research fellow working on the enzyme kinetics and mechanism for the cause of galactosemia.

However, for my family well being, I needed to look for a better living standard, so that I took the first industrial job in Boston.  After I worked for a few years, I was laid off due to office politics, so that I had to look for another job.  However, the same situation happened again and again with several other employments.  I was very sad and disturbed to cause so much trouble for my family.  One day I was suddenly awaken to realize that I would be either fired or laid off again if I should work for another company.  I felt that it might be easier to change myself rather than to change others.  With my wife’s support and encouragement, I found a company called Immunetics and worked on some specialty components in an antibody/antigen reaction system for diagnostic use.  After a few years of hard work on the improvement of the research products, our products were gradually acceptable to the scientific community.

During the time of my effort to develop some new products, I was invited from one of Taiwan Agricultural Divisions to go to Taiwan to help them develop a fast diagnostic technology for early pig infectious disease detection.  I simply replied them without any hesitation that it would be my great honor to serve and help the people of Taiwan. With some guidance and idea exchange with the scientists in Taiwan, the project went quite well and they achieved the goal.   It has been more than 20 years since I started my own company.  Today we have served the scientific community with the best specialty immunochemicals throughout the world.

We have two adult children, Christine and Roger, with good education.  My wife and I are very proud of their achievement.  I consider myself as a very lucky man, and hope to do as much as I can within my ability to improve the life of all mankind.
