A Few Things from My Memory - Ming-Jiun Wu I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the NCKU-NAA Outstanding Alumni Award Selection Committee for nominating and choosing me as a recipient of the 2003 Outstanding Alumni Award. This award is a great honor to me, my family, and members of the NCKUAA of the Pacific Northwest.
I grew up in a small farming village located in Mei-Nung of Kaohsiung County. After school I had to help my parents work in the rice paddy and tobacco farm throughout my elementary and junior high school years. Because of my close contact with nature and soils in the farm, I decided to become a civil engineer. There were many wonderful memories and experiences during my college years at Cheng Kung University. The most memorable one was the surveying camp I participated during the summer vacation after my sophomore year. We slept on student desks in the classroom of an elementary school and walked several miles everyday to survey every corner of the city under the summer sun and the heavy downpouring rain. Our hard work resulted in an impressive Kanshan city geographic and contour map. This map became the basis for urban planning of Kanshan. In 1972 I joined Shannon & Wilson, Inc. in Seattle as a Junior Engineer after obtaining Ph.D. in Civil (Geotechnical) Engineering from University of Washington. In 17 years I became Vice President. Since 1997 I have been Senior Vice President and Chief Engineer supervising more than 60 geotechnical engineers. In the past 30 years, I have performed and/or supervised many important foundation studies and design in the United States and abroad. All of my accomplishments are the result of the excellent education I received from my alma mater Cheng Kung University. My success stems from my hard working attitude, love of engineering, and support from my family. It is essential to balance career with my personal interests. My wife, Shu-shen, is a devoted teacher. Although we have busy work schedules, we swim and exercise daily and travel extensively. We also dedicate our lives to raising our children to become successful and well rounded individuals. I am proud of my children’s achievements. My son is an environmental health specialist and my daughter is a pediatrician.
