Life is but a Stage - Ken P. Chong

I am truly honored to be the recipient of this prestigious award and I would like to express my deep appreciation to everyone who made this possible, especially to Dean Juh-Wah Chen who nominated me. Of all the awards that I received this one has a special meaning and it brings back a lot of memories.

Back in 1960, I graduated from the Hong Kong Queen Elizabeth [English High] School with Distinctions. Had I stayed in Hong Kong I would be graduated from the Medical School of the University of Hong Kong. However life is full of twists – deeply touched by our Republic Founder, Dr. Sun Yet-san and his teachings of building a strong China, I took the entrance exam to study in Taiwan and was admitted to NCKU. I did not speak Mandarin then, but I am a Hakka which made Prof. Lin Bor-Jian's lecture quite easy to comprehend.

I struggled in my freshman year, but by the second semester of the 3rd year I was the top of my class. I spent long hours at the library, and made a lot of life-long friends including Paul K. S. Wah, Paul Liao, Winston Chen, W.C. Ku, Y. T. Hung, etc. By the senior year I was elected as the President of the graduating class of 1964 by all the class monitors. One of the achievements that we did was to publish the Class Book and distributed to every graduate before the commencement. I still have the book with me and my schoolmates come out alive and young from the pages - including my future wife and sweetheart of close to 40 years - Dr. Shuang-Ling Chong (程雙玲) who is a very outstanding chemist and Director of the FHWA's Paint & Corrosion Lab in McLean. She specializes in the durability of bridge coatings and her accelerated deterioration method of paints is used worldwide, known as the Chong Cycle, has been incorporated in the ISO as a standard.

I enjoy fishing, hunting, travel, tennis, calligraphy, movies, etc. We are blessed with two wonderful kids, both graduated from MIT - Fred [the pilot and a rock climber] is now an associate professor in computer sciences and a Chancellor's Fellow at the University of California; and Lillian [the poet and a super cook] is a postdoctor at Stanford in biophysics.

Below is a photo of me with my boss and two kids. Looking back I could not agree more with Shakespeare that "Life is but a stage"... you could pick and choose the role you play.
