From 1959 to 1965 he taught at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania and worked as a consultant at Upjohn Company.  He began his career at SIUC as an associate professor after being recruited to the University’s new engineering programs. In 1969 he was named full professor. He was selected as Dean of Engineering in January 1989, and served nearly ten years until his retirement July 1998. During his tenure as Dean, he worked closely with faculty, staff and university administration to upgrade the College’s instruction and research programs. Their quality and productivity were increased tremendously under his leadership.
Dr. Chen is an expert in energy and environment. He undertook research in bioconversion, water quality control and coal utilization, and published extensively in these areas. Dr. Chen developed strong international linkages for the University including to establish sister university relationship with NCKU and the Technical University of Ostrava, (TUO), Czech Republic. Dr. Chen and his wife Han Lin have been frequent visitors of NCKU since 1983. They visited Tainan at least once a year. By knowing many faculty and administration people on both sides, they were able to help forming a close and working relationship between these two universities. The activities include: faculty and student exchange, joint research projects, and co-sponsored international conferences. The activities are still going strong even after his retirement. For instance, NCKU and SIU just established a One plus One graduate program. Students can study and to receive their degrees on both campuses. A group of selected students came to SIU each summer for two weeks’ leadership workshop. This is a part of Elite program training. There have been many international conferences co-sponsored by NCKU and SIU, the most recent one was supported by NSF, USA and NSC of Taiwan, R.O.C.  In addition, Juh Wah and Han Lin are strong supporters of North American NCKU Alumnus Association. They have involved from the initiation, the growth and the maturity phases. They are one of the most loyal members of our Association.
